Google Ads Conversion Tracking Setup Worksheet (Free)
Plan your Google Ads conversion tracking setup: name each lead action, mark primary or secondary, assign an owner and write a test step. Free worksheet.
What the worksheet asks for
Start with a short business name to use as the naming prefix, such as "ABC HVAC."
Then fill in up to six actions. Action 1 is required, and the rest are optional. For each action:
Type. Call from ad, call to website number, form submit, booking confirmed, chat lead or offline sale.
Detail. The page or service, such as "Quote form."
Setting. Primary or secondary.
Value (optional). Only enter one if you can support it. Use plain digits with at most one decimal point. Entries such as 1e3, +5, -5, 0x10, 1,000 or $5 show the message "Use plain digits, with one decimal point at most."
Owner. A role, not a name.
What you get back
A table you can copy as text, download as a CSV or print. Each row has:
Name, built from your prefix, the action type and the detail, using the pattern Business | Action | Detail
Type, setting and value (shown as dollars, such as $1,000, or "none set")
Owner, or a reminder to assign a role
How to test that type of action
The test step depends on the type. For example, for a form submit it's to submit a test form and confirm the conversion status updates. For a booking it's to make a test booking and confirm the confirmation step is counted once. The worksheet gives a test step for every type. In the CSV download, an action name or owner that starts with =, +, - or @ gets an apostrophe in front so a spreadsheet shows it as plain text.
Why a naming pattern helps
A steady pattern makes the account easier to read and hand over. A new person can see what each action counts without asking.
Primary and secondary
Primary and secondary mean different things in Google Ads, so decide each on purpose. The worksheet links to Google's help page about conversion measurement. Read it for current steps, since rules and screens can change.
What you need before setup
A list of the actions that count as a lead
A data source, such as the Google tag or linked Google Analytics
A test for each action
The worksheet helps you write down the actions and the tests. Google's help page covers the steps.
Tips for filling it in
List only what counts as a lead. Keep the list short.
Name every action the same way. The prefix does most of the work.
Assign an owner role to each. A named role means somebody checks it.
Only add a value you can support. If you don't know it, leave it blank.
Don't enter customer information. The worksheet doesn't need it.
