Website Speed Checklist for Local Businesses
Use this website speed checklist to record your PageSpeed Insights numbers, see where each falls on Google's published ranges and get a to-do list. Free.
What the checklist asks for
The page you tested, and the device tab you looked at: mobile or desktop.
Three numbers from PageSpeed Insights, all optional. Use the real-user (field) values if they're shown:
Largest Contentful Paint, in seconds
Interaction to Next Paint, in milliseconds
Cumulative Layout Shift
Everyday site habits. Tick what is already true. There are twelve.
You run your own page through PageSpeed Insights and type in what it shows. The checklist doesn't measure anything itself.
What you get back
A speed checklist with:
Measured, the numbers you entered, each labelled Good, Needs improvement or Poor, using the ranges Google lists on its "About PageSpeed Insights" page.
Done, the habits you ticked.
To do, the habits you didn't.
A reminder to re-test the same page after each change and record the new numbers.
Copy it, download it as a .txt file or print it.
Where the ranges come from
The Good, Needs improvement and Poor ranges are the thresholds Google lists on its PageSpeed Insights documentation page, which the checklist links to. Check that page for current values, because Google can change them.
The everyday habits
The list is in plain language. It covers things like:
Photos that are resized and compressed before they're uploaded
One large image or video at the top of a page, not several
Videos that load on tap instead of playing on load
Sliders and animations kept to a minimum
Unused plugins, apps and widgets removed, along with old tracking codes and chat widgets
Only the fonts the design needs
Key pages checked on a phone on mobile data, and re-checked after any new widget or script
A question to your host about the caching and hosting plan the site uses
One clear action per page, such as call or request a quote
An owner for checking speed after each site change
Keep a page speed checklist going
Record your numbers the same way each time: the same page, the same device tab. A page speed checklist is most useful as a routine, not a one-time fix, so re-run it after any change to the site.
